Ray Charles plays the first event
A private concert by Ray Charles on August 12, 1996, was the first event, with a crowd of nearly 12,000. The building opened as the CoreStates Center at a cost of $210 million and replaced the Spectrum for the Flyers and the 76ers. The lead says the financing was largely private.
