Exhibition hockey opens the arena
The arena opened on October 1, 1988, with an exhibition between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. It was built to replace the smaller MECCA and to chase an NHL club that never arrived. The Bucks and Marquette played there until 2018, and the Admirals until 2016.
